Web 2.0 Gives Quick Results With Little Effort

A few weeks ago, I received a Google Alert that the NYTimes.com had commented on a video I created. Their comment was not complementary, but not entirely bad either. It said "Putting Your Customers First, What A Concept!" But it was still a comment from the NYTimes!

This really excited me and got me thinking about how quickly some Web 2.0 marketing techniques actually work. Just the fact that I was mentioned on their website after a one day old blog post and a two week old video was something that opened my eyes to a new world. These are the kind of things that happen in social marketing. Now that I knew that people were actually watching those videos and actually reading those blog posts, I wanted to be sure to improve the quality of the content; you never know who will be reading and when. The lifetime of content on the Internet is very long - like forever!

I am just guessing but I believe that one of the articles I submitted to AOL's Propeller.com attracted their attention. It had no mention of the video in it. And then, I am speculating, they did a search on my name and browsed my websites and found the video!

The speed of video sites, like YouTube and MetaCafé, in spreading your message all over the Internet within a matter of hours is nothing short of astounding. Within a matter of minutes, and within lifting a finger, my video had been distributed and viewed by over 350 people, and I hadn't even checked all of the other video sites I had submitted to. Many videos never receive any views at all.

This is no giant number, but it illustrates the point I am making concerning the speed of using Web 2.0 techniques.

Even some blog posts that I wrote over a year ago are getting attention now that I have started to social bookmark my new posts; when people pick up on the new posts by an author, they seem to do searches for other material by the same author. This shows the importance of writing something that will actually be perceived as valuable to the reader.

Some of the methods that I used in the distribution of my videos and blog posts might be of interest to you. When I distributed my video, I used a paid service called Traffic Geyser (submits to over 30 sites) and a free service called Tube Mongul, which submits to 12 sites at the same time.

Due to one little video and a few articles I submitted to social bookmarking sites, other people started to blog about things like a StomperNet article I wrote over a year ago. When you social bookmark, people blog about what you write about, even if you wrote it months or years ago.

I used SocialMarker.com to submit to 30 different socialbookmarking sites. This is a free service.

The initial job of joining all of these sites is well worth the traffic and attention that you receive later on.
